Salam Alaik...
Last friday...in my Commercial Law class Sir talked on Law Of Agency… I didn’t really remember what Sir Naqib was saying because we are all distracted by our quiz that will be held at the end of the class. But I remembered Sir was talking something about freedom of speech. It kind of captures my immediate attention.
Wikipedia defines freedom of speech as freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation. The right to freedom of speech is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The ICCPR recognizes the right to freedom of speech as "the right to hold opinions without interference.
At the end of the day, Raihan ask me if I want to check out the cartoon of the Prophet in the Denmark’s Newspaper downloaded in her laptop. Raihan said this is one of the weaknesses of freedom of speech. The freedom that they get is used to hurt others. She said she have to do an assignment about this issue.
There should have some limitation even though it is a freedom. These limitations will act as guidelines so that people will still have some respect for others. People are free to talk and give their opinion but have to watch out for sensitive issues such as religion.
Last but not least, there are times that we could express our thought, but doesn’t mean that you don’t have to listen to others’ thought.
P/s: You have the freedom to talk, BUT you have no right at all to hurt others.
So for those who had been a victim of my freedom of speech, I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you at all.
